Deflated
The Sonoma County Sculpture Jam Artists, Beth Hartmann, David Furger, Gordon Carter and Jeffrey Zankel have been working together for more than 15 years. The composition of the group changes but the intent to create interesting public sculptures remains. Members also enjoy sharing resources, camaraderie, and the give and take of decision-making as they create together.
Together they created "Deflated" for the Sculpture Trail. The idea of creating a gigantic collapsing football was conceived even before Deflategate. According to the artists, some observers will relate the piece to the state of professional football with diminishing fans, cases of corruption, financial shenanigans, and teams relocating to a different state, thus disappointing their established base.
The piece was constructed of steel, with a sturdy steel armature and an attached cement base. It is 43" tall by 26" by 24" and is located in front of Shaw House. The sponsor of this gigantic football is J. Howell Fine Art.
